Geography

HK lies in the north-eastern Bohemia on the conluence of the two rivers – Labe and Orlice. It belongs to the largest cities in the CR. 1t is the centre oj East Bohemia where state institutions,
banks, businesses, schooles are situated. There is also a museum, art gallery, two theatres and sport cIubs. At present it has about 100 000 inhabitants.
Famous Petrofpianos are produced here and also machines for chemical factories, ship engines and medical tools.

Traffic

Traffic is very well solved in our city. There are two trafic rings – the smaller one around old town walls and the bigger one is wider. The motorway Dll connects the city to Prague and to further parts of the republic. There are traffic jams on Fridays and we have a lot of problems with parking. Public transport – buses and trolleys – is excellent.

History

The area around Hradec králové was already settled i the prehistoric age. Hradec Králové was a trade centre of eastern Bohemia. In the past…Václav the Second chose the town as a dowry town for Czech queens. One if them was Eliska Rejcka, the wife of Charles the Fourth.

Culture

HK is a very cultural town where there is always a lot to do. There are a lot of cultural events, for example Rock for People festvival in July, Hip Hop Camp in August where you can spend three days of music, rap and adrenalin sports. This event takes place at the airport. Another big festival is Jazz goes to town in October. There is a concert hall in the city where Hradec philharmonic orchestra often plays. There is a famous art cinema in HK. It is called Central. It has a film club where you can see special films. This month all Bergman’ s films are on. Another important cul ture centre is Aldis. Lots of cultural events are taken place there: for example the exibition od secondary schools.

Art

A lot of intelligent people live in HK. That is why some authors like the city. For example Zdenek Sverak from the Theatre of Jára Cimrman likes our city very much. This was the reason why he chose Hradec theatre for last rehersal ofhis new play called “Ceské nebe”. There are a lot ofmusic groups in HK. The most famous one is the Spectrum. They play rock songs. We also have the galery ofmodern art here. Today you can see there an exhibition of František Kupka.
A good example ofmodern architecture is New Brewery Square with Regiocentrum where regionla offices are placed. We also have a new scientific library ion the town. People calle this building emental cheese. It is built in X shape and has round windows.

Sport

There must be a reason why people sometimes called HK the City of Sport. You can do different soprts in our town: football, ice-hiockey, volleyball, karate, judo, water polo, hockey, floorbaal, sqash, tennis and table tennis, swimmingrugby, handball, baseball, golf, badmington, athletics …
Many sport branches are very succesful. We also have a new climbing wall, many fitness centres, a bowling centre.

Shopping

There are about ten shopping centres in the town. Futurum is the most favourite one. There are shops, restaurants, fast food restaurants, lots ofboutiques (for example New Yorker, Adidas, Kenvelo … ) People like shopping and spending money in these shops. People come to Futurum to have lunch . There are a lot of restaurants in the city. The most favourite Chinese reastaurant is in the Cemigov Hotel. The well known pizzeria is Santa Maria, where you can taste very good pizzas. ln A Sport is a bowling alley with a great bar.. ln the centre of the you can walk in pedestrian zone, where are small shops and boutiques, two fountains and a lot od pubs and cafes.

Leisure time

HK is well-known as a “green town”: there are many parks here. The most popular parks are Jiráseks Gardens and Žižkas Gardens. The first one is situated on the banks ofthe confluence ofthe two rivers Labe and Orlice and one of Hradec old churches is there: wooden church of St. Nicholaus .. Across the river, there is a walking area with a path leading downtown. Another popular park is Šimeks Gardens. There is a skatepark for young people there. There are cycling tracks in HK where people can go cycling or in-line skating and they can go out oj central Hradec to quieter parts called Malšovice or Nový Hradec and to the woods. Walking in woods is also popular. lt is a good way oj relaxing.

Other beautiful cities

HK is the best city in the CR but you can explore other places too. Prague is the capitel of the country and it is the biggest.. lt is situated in the middle of the country. You can visit Old Town, Jewish Ghetto, Charles brigde and Prague Castle there. Jt is easy to move aroudthe city because there is underground there. The most interesting area is the Castle with the Gothic cathedral of St. Vitus. The Castle has dominated the panorama of the city for the past millenium.

Don ‘t stay at home. you can go and see the otwn of Kutná Hora with a huge cathedral of St. Barbora. There were silver mines there in the past and coins were made there.
